Welcome to the Farming2020 blog.

Wharf42 is proud to support the Farming2020 initiative. Over the past two years, our investment into WNT Ventures and our co-hosting of the 2016 Silicon Valley AgTech Immersion Program and Conference with New Zealand partner, Callaghan Innovation, has enabled us to build a deep understanding of the sector.

It was this sector focus that prompted both the New Zealand Technology Association and Techweek 2017 national organisers to approach Wharf42 to initiate a Techweek 17, AgTech focused event, in May. It was an opportunity, we could not turn down. During Techweek 2016, over 55 events were held. It was a great week. Unfortunately, not a single one had an AgTech or primary industry sector focus. The Farming2020 initiative has been created to rectify that.

New Zealand’s agriculture and primary industry sectors’ continue to play a significant role in our national economy. The role of digital technology is changing the face of agricultural production as robotics, sensors, UAV’s and similar digital devices, deliver insightful data to farmers on a scale not previously available. This data not only supports better decision-making for increasing agricultural production, it also provides valuable opportunities to improve sustainability and address key issues around environmental impact. As global demand for food is expected to increase by 70% by 2050, the ability to farm both sustainably and efficiently becomes ever more important.

Farming2020 will showcase a number of New Zealand’s emerging and established AgTech businesses and their solutions. As global domain experts in all aspects of agriculture, this is one very significant tech sector that should see this country leading the way.

Over the coming weeks, we will publish regular posts to this site to keep you fully up to speed with both the Farming2020 Event planning as well as important issues that relate to New Zealand’s growing AgTech sector.

As the Program supporting this initiative builds, this blog will provide you with all the information you need to connect and engage.

Welcome to the Farming2020 blog.
